Banshee

Banshee has lovely breed type with exceptional structure and movement. She is 23 1/4 tall and is very square with a short back and excellent shoulders. Her head is gorgeous and typey with perfect ear set and almond eyes. Her side gait is effortless and floating with full extension and level top line. Her single track gait is graceful and clean. In 2005 she ranked #11 Belgian Tervuren (Canine Chronicle). She achieved this ranking in only twelve weekends of showing during 2005. She achieved Best of Breed at all but five of the shows she entered and won Best of Opposite Sex three out of the other five shows she was exhibited at. She is always owner handled.

Banshee is a high energy girl and has a very strong natural herding instinct. She's been brought up with cats, dogs and horses. True to the Belgian Tervuren breed, she's aloof with strangers. Once you pass inspection she'll readily take your food and scratches, though. Her naturally inquisitive nature gets her into trouble every now and again... like the time she rolled backwards paws over tail down a hill after an angry ground squirrel scolded her for sticking her nose in his house.

Like most Tervuren, she has three gears: Fast, Faster, and Asleep. As for her personality... she's quite a character. She's top dog without a doubt and isn't afraid to exert her dominance by collecting bones and toys from the other dogs and putting them in a pile she then guards from them. She's a firm believer in the "What's yours is mine and what's mine is mine" philosophy! Her nickname is the "fun police". If the other dogs start playing, she quickly runs over to steal their toy and stop the unauthorized fun. Fun is only authorized if she starts it.

Banshee is the provider of endless entertainment for us, but she also has a grand sense of pride. She's always been an extraordinarily showy show dog. She struts her stuff and arches her neck as if all the applause was solely for her. At home, if she does something embarrassing she'll slink off somewhere until the humiliation passes.

She also has a foot fetish. That is, she likes to sleep with her head on your feet. (What can we say?) She hates to be wrong so she takes it personally when she's corrected and has perfected that whole hurt puppy look thing.

She's as sweet as pie and it is hard to resist petting her when she comes over and puts her head on your lap, but if you ignore her... she'll force you to pet her (somewhat violently) by pushing her nose into your hand, repeatedly, until you comply.

Banshee is really quite a clown, but I wouldn't tell her that if I were you. She fancies herself the elegant little princess and is quite the pampered "pageant" pooch. Of course it's hard to take the princess seriously when she's sleeping upside down in the hall with all four paws in the air. Not terribly dignified, eh princess?

In the summer of 2007, Banshee developed a soft tissue sarcoma in her left ear. She had it and her entire ear canal removed. The exterior portion of the ear was saved, but no longer stands up. Though the sarcoma is not an inherited form of cancer and poses no increased risk to my breeding program the surgery left her ineligible for further competition. She was bred for her third and final litter in 2008, but unfortunately had to be spayed after developing a pyometra (infection of the uterus). She was Thyroid normal prior to the age of 7, but upon recheck in 2008 is now borderline hypothyroid. She is non-symptomatic and does not require medication.

I am thankful for what she blessed me with and am thrilled with the quality she brought to my breeding program and my life in general. She's a special girl and has earned the next phase of her life...
